Everything below comes straight from federal regulation (14 CFR Part 61). Meet these and nothing stands between you and a certificate:

  • Age: begin lessons at any age, solo at 16, and hold the certificate at 17. There is no upper limit — we've trained retirees who checkride in their seventies.

  • Flight experience: at least 40 hours under Part 61, including 20 with an instructor and 10 solo, with specific cross-country, night, and instrument-reference tasks.
  • The practical test: an oral exam and flight evaluation with an FAA-designated examiner — the famous checkride.

Age 17, no FAA medical needed — a valid U.S. driver's license suffices. Light-sport aircraft, one passenger, daytime flying.

Age 17 with a third-class medical. Any single-engine airplane you're rated for, unlimited passengers, day or night, anywhere in the U.S.

Myth-Busting

What You Do Not Need to Become a Pilot

What age do you need to be to get a pilot license?

Can I get a pilot license if I wear glasses?
