Getting Started

New to aviation? You are in exactly the right place. Most of our students walked in with zero flight experience and walked out as certified pilots. Here is how it begins.

Do I need any experience to start flying?
No experience at all is required. The vast majority of our students begin with no flying background whatsoever. Your instructor teaches you everything from the ground up, starting on your very first lesson. All you need is the desire to learn and the willingness to show up consistently.
What is a discovery flight?
A discovery flight is a short introductory lesson where you sit in the pilot seat and actually take the controls with an instructor beside you. It is the best way to feel what flying is really like before committing to a program. If you enroll within 24 hours of your discovery flight, the fee is credited 100% toward your training.
How do I take my first lesson?
Just reach out and we will get you scheduled. Most students start with a discovery flight or a free consultation, then move into a full program once they know which certificate fits their goals. Call us at (818) 422-0494 or book online and we will handle the rest.
The Investment

Costs & Financing

Learning to fly is an investment, and we believe in being completely transparent about what it costs. Here is how pricing and financing work at Flight School LA.

How much does flight training cost?
Cost depends on which certificate or rating you pursue. Our Standard Private Pilot License course is $10,900 complete, and other programs are priced individually. Because so much of the cost is flight time, training consistently and efficiently keeps your total lower. We will give you honest, all-in numbers during a free consultation.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Financing options are available, and many students spread their payments across the length of their training rather than paying everything up front. We will walk you through the options that fit your situation during your consultation so the cost never becomes a barrier to flying.
Is the discovery flight credited toward training?
Yes. If you enroll in a program within 24 hours of your discovery flight, the full cost of that flight is credited toward your training. It is our way of rewarding students who are ready to commit and get started.
Eligibility

Requirements & Medical

The FAA sets clear, achievable requirements to begin training. Most people are surprised by how few barriers there really are. Here is what you need.

How old do I have to be to start?
You can begin flight lessons at any age. To fly solo you must be at least 16, and to be issued a Private Pilot License you must be 17. Many of our younger students start training early so they are ready to earn their certificate the moment they qualify.
Do I need a medical certificate?
Yes, you will need a valid FAA medical certificate to fly solo, typically a third-class medical for private training. We can point you to a local aviation medical examiner near Van Nuys, and most students complete the exam quickly and easily.
Do I need to speak English or pass a TSA check?
FAA rules require that pilots be able to read, speak, and understand English. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you will also need TSA approval before beginning flight training, which is a straightforward process we help you navigate step by step.
How Long

Timelines

The most common question we hear is how long it takes. The honest answer is that it depends on how often you fly. Here is what to expect.

How long does it take to get a Private Pilot License?
Most students finish in three to nine months. Flying two to three times a week often leads to completion in three to five months, while training once a week around a full-time job typically takes six to nine. Because we are open 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, you can fly consistently around your schedule and finish faster.
How long does it take to go from zero to airline-ready?
A motivated full-time student can progress from no experience to building the certificates and ratings required for an airline career in roughly two years, sometimes faster. The path runs through your private license, instrument rating, commercial certificate, and hour building. We will lay out a realistic timeline based on your pace during a consultation.
Can I train part-time around a job or school?
Absolutely. Many of our students train around demanding careers and class schedules. Our extended hours, 9 AM to 9 PM every day, make it easy to fly early mornings, evenings, or weekends so your training fits your life instead of the other way around.
