Why Train Here

Why an Instrument Rating in Los Angeles Matters

An Instrument Rating is the single most valuable upgrade you can add after your private certificate. It teaches you to fly solely by reference to your instruments, so weather no longer dictates whether you fly. For pilots based in Los Angeles, that skill is essential. Our region brings marine-layer mornings, coastal fog, and some of the busiest controlled airspace in the country, and an instrument-rated pilot moves through all of it with precision and confidence.

Flight School LA has trained Southern California pilots for more than 15 years from our home base at Van Nuys Airport (KVNY). Instrument training here is not academic. You will fly real approaches into real airports, talk to real ATC, and handle the exact conditions you will face once you are rated. The result is a safer, more capable, more employable pilot.

Fly in Real Weather

Stop canceling flights when the marine layer rolls in. Instrument skills let you depart, navigate, and land in conditions that ground VFR-only pilots.

Unlock Travel & Utility

An IFR-rated pilot can plan trips with confidence, file into IMC, and use the full national airspace system instead of waiting for clear skies.

A Career Stepping Stone

The Instrument Rating is a required building block toward your Commercial certificate and an airline career. Employers expect it.

Before You Start

Requirements & Prerequisites

The FAA sets clear minimums for the Instrument Rating under Part 61. We help you meet each one efficiently and document everything correctly so your checkride goes smoothly.

  • Hold a current FAA Private Pilot Certificate (airplane).
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
  • Log at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command.
  • Complete 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument flight time, including approved simulator time.
  • Receive ground and flight instruction from an authorized instructor and an endorsement to test.
  • Pass the FAA Instrument Airplane knowledge (written) exam.
  • Pass the FAA practical test (checkride) with a Designated Pilot Examiner.
Already hold a private certificate from another school? Bring your logbook to a free consultation and we will map the fastest path to your rating.
The Program

Instrument Curriculum: Simulator + Flight

Our instrument curriculum blends classroom ground school, full-motion simulator sessions, and in-aircraft flight training. We use a Redbird advanced aviation training device (ATD) to drill procedures, approaches, and emergencies in a low-pressure environment before you fly them. Simulator time is FAA-creditable toward your rating, which keeps your training efficient and your costs controlled.

1

Ground & Theory

Instrument regulations, weather, charts, IFR flight planning, and the FAA knowledge exam prep, taught one-on-one or in small groups.

2

Redbird ATD Simulator

Master holds, intercepts, and precision and non-precision approaches in the Redbird simulator before taking them into the aircraft.

3

Flight Training

Fly real IFR approaches into KVNY and surrounding airports, partial-panel work, and instrument cross-country flights with your instructor.

4

Checkride Prep

A full mock checkride and oral review so you walk into your practical test ready and confident.

FAQ

Instrument Rating Questions

Do I need my Private Pilot License before starting?
Yes. The FAA requires a Private Pilot Certificate before you begin Instrument Rating training. If you trained elsewhere, bring your logbook and we will pick up right where you left off.
How much of my training can be done in the simulator?
You can credit a meaningful portion of your required instrument time toward your rating using our Redbird advanced aviation training device. Simulator work is also the most efficient way to master approaches and procedures before flying them in the aircraft.
How long will it take to finish?
Most students finish in two to four months at two to three flights per week. Accelerated full-time tracks can be completed in as little as four to six weeks.
Is financing available?
Yes. We offer financing so you can spread the cost of your Instrument Rating across monthly payments. Ask about options during your free consultation.
Where are you located?
We are based at Van Nuys Airport (KVNY) in Los Angeles and are open 9 AM to 9 PM, 7 days a week.
