The Certificate

What Your Private Pilot License Lets You Do

The Private Pilot License (PPL) is the foundation of recreational and professional flying. Once you hold it, you can act as pilot in command of an aircraft, carry friends and family as passengers, and travel cross-country on your own schedule. It is the certificate most people picture when they imagine learning to fly, and at Flight School LA it is the most popular program we run out of Van Nuys Airport.

A private certificate opens up day and night flying, trips to airports up and down the California coast, and access to thousands of destinations across the United States. It is also the required first step if you ever plan to add an instrument rating, fly commercially, or pursue an airline career.

Carry Passengers

Fly friends and family anywhere in the country once you hold your certificate. No charge for the flight, just the freedom to share it.

Travel On Your Schedule

Skip the airport lines. Plan weekend trips to Santa Barbara, Big Bear, Catalina, and beyond at your own pace.

Build Toward More

Use the PPL as the launchpad for instrument, commercial, and airline training when you are ready to go further.

Eligibility

Private Pilot License Requirements

The FAA sets clear, achievable requirements for the Private Pilot License. Most students are surprised by how attainable they are. You do not need a college degree, perfect vision, or any prior flying experience to begin.

  • Be at least 16 years old to fly solo and 17 years old to be issued the certificate.
  • Hold a valid FAA third-class medical certificate (we help you find a local aviation medical examiner).
  • Be able to read, speak, and understand English.
  • Log a minimum of 40 flight hours under FAA Part 61, including dual instruction and solo time.
  • Pass the FAA knowledge (written) exam and a practical checkride with a designated examiner.

While the FAA minimum is 40 hours, most students nationwide finish in the 50 to 70 hour range. Your pace depends on how often you fly, and our schedule (open 9 AM to 9 PM, 7 days a week) makes it easy to fly consistently and progress faster.

Your discovery flight fee is credited 100% toward training if you enroll within 24 hours.
The Path

Curriculum & Three Training Stages

Our Private Pilot License curriculum is built around three clear stages, each ending with a checkpoint so you always know exactly where you stand. You will pair ground instruction with hands-on flying from day one.

1

Stage One: Fundamentals

Aircraft control, takeoffs and landings, slow flight, stalls, and emergency procedures, building to your first solo flight.

2

Stage Two: Cross-Country

Navigation, flight planning, radio communication, and solo cross-country flights across Southern California airspace.

3

Stage Three: Checkride Prep

Night flying, maneuver polishing, written-exam preparation, and a thorough mock checkride before your FAA practical test.

Timeline

How Long It Takes

There is no single answer, because the right timeline depends on you. Students who fly two or three times per week often finish in three to five months. Those flying once a week or training around a full-time job typically take six to nine months. Because we are open 9 AM to 9 PM every day, you can fly mornings, evenings, or weekends without your career pace slowing your progress.

The most important factor is consistency. Frequent, regular lessons let skills build on each other so you spend less time re-learning and more time advancing. Your instructor will help you set a realistic schedule during your first lessons.
