Earn your Private Pilot License in Los Angeles with Flight School LA at Van Nuys Airport (KVNY). Train in modern aircraft with veteran instructors, fly real Southern California airspace from your first lesson, and finish with a certificate that lets you carry passengers anywhere in the country.
The Private Pilot License (PPL) is the foundation of recreational and professional flying. Once you hold it, you can act as pilot in command of an aircraft, carry friends and family as passengers, and travel cross-country on your own schedule. It is the certificate most people picture when they imagine learning to fly, and at Flight School LA it is the most popular program we run out of Van Nuys Airport.
A private certificate opens up day and night flying, trips to airports up and down the California coast, and access to thousands of destinations across the United States. It is also the required first step if you ever plan to add an instrument rating, fly commercially, or pursue an airline career.
Fly friends and family anywhere in the country once you hold your certificate. No charge for the flight, just the freedom to share it.
Skip the airport lines. Plan weekend trips to Santa Barbara, Big Bear, Catalina, and beyond at your own pace.
Use the PPL as the launchpad for instrument, commercial, and airline training when you are ready to go further.
The FAA sets clear, achievable requirements for the Private Pilot License. Most students are surprised by how attainable they are. You do not need a college degree, perfect vision, or any prior flying experience to begin.
While the FAA minimum is 40 hours, most students nationwide finish in the 50 to 70 hour range. Your pace depends on how often you fly, and our schedule (open 9 AM to 9 PM, 7 days a week) makes it easy to fly consistently and progress faster.
Our Private Pilot License curriculum is built around three clear stages, each ending with a checkpoint so you always know exactly where you stand. You will pair ground instruction with hands-on flying from day one.
Aircraft control, takeoffs and landings, slow flight, stalls, and emergency procedures, building to your first solo flight.
Navigation, flight planning, radio communication, and solo cross-country flights across Southern California airspace.
Night flying, maneuver polishing, written-exam preparation, and a thorough mock checkride before your FAA practical test.

Flight School LA maintains a well-equipped, meticulously maintained fleet so your training time is spent flying, not waiting on the ground. You will learn in stable, forgiving trainers that are ideal for building strong fundamentals.
Modern composite trainers with excellent visibility and responsive handling, perfect for primary training.
The most trusted training aircraft in aviation history, forgiving and stable for new pilots learning the basics.
Comfortable, dependable single-engine aircraft that handle cross-country training and checkride prep with ease.
Our Standard Private Pilot License course is a complete, all-in pathway to your certificate. Financing is available, and many students spread payments across their training timeline rather than paying everything up front.
If you would prefer a more inclusive package with extra flight hours, all materials, and full exam and checkride preparation bundled in, consider upgrading. Our Comprehensive Private Pilot Course runs $15,900, and our Turbo Cirrus Private Pilot Course, taught in a glass-cockpit Cirrus SR22T, is $23,900. There is no single answer, because the right timeline depends on you. Students who fly two or three times per week often finish in three to five months. Those flying once a week or training around a full-time job typically take six to nine months. Because we are open 9 AM to 9 PM every day, you can fly mornings, evenings, or weekends without your career pace slowing your progress.
The most important factor is consistency. Frequent, regular lessons let skills build on each other so you spend less time re-learning and more time advancing. Your instructor will help you set a realistic schedule during your first lessons.
