Why Add It

Why a Multi-Engine Rating Matters

A Multi-Engine Rating in Los Angeles is one of the smartest investments a career-track pilot can make. It lets you act as pilot in command of airplanes with more than one engine, and just as importantly, it builds the multi-engine time that airlines and operators weigh heavily when hiring. Flight School LA has been training Southern California pilots from Van Nuys Airport (KVNY) for more than 15 years, and our multi-engine program is built to be efficient and checkride-ready.

Twin-engine flying introduces new skills: managing two powerplants, understanding asymmetric thrust, and handling an engine failure with control and confidence. These are the competencies that mark a professional pilot and that hiring boards want to see logged in your book.

Twin Time for Hiring

Multi-engine hours are highly valued by airlines and operators. This rating starts the clock on building them.

Fly More Capable Aircraft

Command faster, higher-performance twins with the redundancy of a second engine.

Professional Edge

Engine-out management and systems knowledge that set serious career pilots apart.

Before You Start

Requirements

The Multi-Engine Rating is an add-on, so the prerequisites are straightforward. There is no separate written exam for the add-on rating, which is part of what makes it such an efficient credential to earn.

  • Hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate (airplane single-engine).
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
  • Hold a current FAA medical certificate appropriate to your privileges.
  • Receive ground and flight training on multi-engine aerodynamics, systems, and engine-out procedures.
  • Earn an instructor endorsement to test.
  • Pass the FAA multi-engine practical test (checkride). No additional written exam is required for the add-on rating.

The Program

Multi-Engine Curriculum

Our multi-engine curriculum is concentrated and hands-on. You will spend time on the systems and aerodynamics unique to twins, then quickly move into the aircraft to fly the maneuvers your checkride requires.

1

Systems & Aerodynamics

Multi-engine performance, V-speeds, critical engine, and the aerodynamics behind asymmetric thrust.

2

Engine-Out Procedures

Identify, verify, and feather. Master single-engine control, drift-down, and engine-out approaches and landings.

3

Maneuvers & Takeoffs

Steep turns, slow flight, stalls, and normal, short-field, and engine-failure takeoff and landing scenarios.

4

Checkride Prep

A focused mock checkride and oral review so you finish quickly and confidently.
