The Piper Warrior: the trainer that taught the world to fly

A low-wing member of the legendary PA-28 Cherokee family, the Warrior is stable, IFR-equipped, and honest in every phase of flight. It is the airplane generations of pilots earned their wings in — and two of them fly from our Van Nuys line every day.

The Aircraft

The Cherokee, perfected for training

Piper's PA-28 has been the backbone of flight training for over half a century, and the Warrior is the version that got the formula right: a longer, tapered wing for gentle stall behavior, a dependable 160-horsepower Lycoming, and a cabin roomy enough to fly with an instructor and still bring a friend along.

Sit low over the wing and you get a stable, planted feel that makes learning to land far less intimidating. Because our Warriors are IFR-equipped, the same airplane that teaches you to fly can carry you straight through your instrument rating without ever switching cockpits.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is the Piper Warrior a good airplane to learn in?
Very. Its tapered wing gives gentle, predictable stall behavior, and the low-wing layout feels planted in the landing flare — which is exactly where new pilots want confidence. It has trained pilots for decades for good reason.
What engine does the Warrior have?
A 160-horsepower Lycoming. It is smooth, reliable, and provides plenty of performance for training while keeping operating costs reasonable.
How fast is it?
The Warrior cruises around 128 knots, which makes cross-country training flights efficient and gives you real travelling capability once you are rated.
Can I do my instrument rating in the Warrior?
Yes. Our Warriors are IFR-equipped, so you can earn your Private and then continue straight into your instrument rating in the same familiar cockpit.
Does simulator time count toward my license?
Approved time in our Redbird simulators can be logged toward your certificate and ratings, and it is a cost-effective way to master procedures before flying them.
Low wing or high wing — does it matter for learning?
Both make excellent trainers. The low-wing Warrior offers a stable, connected feel and great over-the-nose visibility on landing; many pilots love learning in it. What matters most is consistent time with a good instructor.
